Learn To Speak Any Foreign Language From Zero To Fluency With This One Study Method.

Tell Your Stories And Watch Your Language Skill Grow

Language Lords is best known for his intensive learning of languages in short amounts of time.

In June 2020, he learned to speak fluent French in just 30 days. In this article, I explore one of his methods: his beginner-friendly method for developing speaking skills. Do this method consistently over time and it will get you speaking faster, more fluently & with a better accent. All you need is a computer & two free apps: DeepL & Anki. Here's how Language Lords does it:

Step #1 - Tell a story for 5 minutes

Most people think language learning is difficult.

All you have to do is tell your stories.

  • Get on your computer & open up a programme that can record a video
  • record yourself telling a story in your target language for 5 minutes
  • Make sure it’s about you & one you know well (If you need, summarise it first in your native language).
  • If you finish before the time is are up, tell it again
  • if you don't finish it in time, keep going until you do
  • If you don't know how to say a certain word, say it in your native language
  • if you don't know how to structure a certain sentence, give it your best guess in your target language then repeat it in your native language

Step #2 - Write down new words & sentences

Watch the video, look out for two things and write them down:

  1. words that you did not know
  2. sentences that you did not know how to structure

Then do the following:

  • Take the list of words and translate them in DeepL
  • Open an Anki deck and title it the name of your story
  • (This deck is only for words you need to tell THIS story; every story gets its own deck)
  • Take the sentences you didn't know how to structure and translate them in DeepL
  • Put them in a google sheet

Step #3 - Repeat step 1&2 (2more times)

Tell the same story for another five minutes.

You should see that it's quite a bit easier to do this now that you have looked up the words and sentence structures. But, telling the story will still likely be difficult at this point.

If it is, just keep going.

After the second session is done watch the video.

You probably told it differently with some new words.

Repeat the process:

  • write down any new words that you didn't know how to say
  • write down any new sentences that you didn't know how to structure
  • add the new words to the Anki deck
  • add the new sentences to the google sheet

Now, repeat the process a third time…

Step #4 - Make it routine

Do the same exercise with the same story for a week straight.

The second week you do this start a new story.

In the next week a third story and so on.

As you get better at doing this exercise, you won't need an entire week for each story.

Continue moving on to story after story working your way up to the point where it only takes two days to finish the exercise and move to the next.

In doing this, you're going to develop words and phrases related to:

  • your interests
  • your friends
  • your family
  • your job.

As you continue, you’ll start being able to use these words in different contexts outside of these stories.

That's the beginning of fluency!

Step #5 - Internalise

The last thing is to use Anki and Google sheets to internalize the words that you have learned.

Go over the deck that you created for this story at least twice a day;

  • once right before you start this storytelling exercise
  • once either before you go to bed or right after you wake up
  • Do the same thing with the sentences that you put in the google sheet;
  • Just read over them don't really stress it

This will make telling the story much easier, helping you to recall the words that you need faster.

You’ll notice that after a few days of telling the story, you’ll be able to tell it almost automatically.

Step #6 - Get a Language Partner

Language partners are a great way to practice communicating with everyday language.

Here’s how to bring what you have been learning into the discussion:

  • Write out your entire story beforehand
  • Send it to your language partner during your session
  • Let them correct it & explain why they would change certain things

This will help you improve your grammar and find more natural ways of saying things.

Language partners can be found on hellotalk which you can download on the app store.

-

And now you’re on your way to fluency in a second language.

Fluency is all about how well you use the words that you know in different contexts.

This comes from practising the words that you use most often in your everyday life which is exactly what you get from this exercise

Are you still dreaming of learning that language you’ve always wanted to?

Don’t wait.

Start now.
